The Insurance Institute of Zambia (IIZA) is currently registered under the Societies Act Cap 119 of the Laws of Zambia as an individual based PROFFESSIONAL BODY for all insurance and risk management practitioners in the Zambian Insurance and Pensions industry.   In order to consolidate IIZA’s position, the ‘IIZA DRAFT BILL’ is now receiving final review for onward transmission to the Ministries of Justice and Finance for eventual enactment. This enactment shall make IIZA as the sole educational and training professional body in setting standards in the practice of insurance and pensions in Zambia.  Once the IIZA DRAFT BILL is passed into Law, it shall actualize its Status similar to the Statuses enjoyed and held by other individual based local professional bodies such as the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ), the Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA), Zambia Institute of Marketing (ZIM), Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) e.t.c

The proposed IIZA Act shall therefore make membership of the Institute compulsory to all the professionals practicing at all levels in the Industry including Risk Carriers, Pension Funds Managers, Brokers, Agents, Loss Adjusters, Loss Assessors, Actuaries, Risk Management Consultants, In-House Insurance Advisors in Industry and Commerce and In-House Sales Representatives.  The aim and fundamentals of the IIZA Act once in place is to ensure that those who provide insurance and pension services are knowledgeable and trust worthy.

In order to achieve industry “BEST PRACTICE” in Corporate Governance and Intellectual Capital Management, IIZA has approached and sought the cooperation of the Pensions and Insurance Authority (PIA), the Insurers Association of Zambia (IAZ), the Insurance Brokers Association of Zambia (IBAZ), and the Zambia Association of Pension Funds (ZAPF) to make IIZA membership a pre-requisite to holding any position in the Industry.  This is to the advantage of the individual practitioners, the entities they work for and most importantly to the benefit of the Customers.

ATTRIBUTES SUCCESSFUL RISK PROFESSIONALS SHOULD POSSESS REGARDLESS OF LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE

The Risk and Insurance Management Society(RIMS-USA) President for 2009 ,Joe Restoule,CIP,CRM was asked what he considered as some of the most important attributes that risk professionals should possess, whether they are just starting out in their careers or have moved into senior roles in their selected sector of our market and we quote his response as follows:-

“Regardless of your experience level, analyzing Risk requires a thorough assessment through persistent inquiries about the nature of the risk; asking yourself: what are the risks associated with a particular endeavor that can assist the business units in achieving their objectives? You need to think deep, think laterally, and think creatively with the information and data about the risk you have to explore. Venture out to think about the absurd! Can it happen? You Bet! Look at the major events that have transpired since 2000. Managing Risk involves unlocking the uncertainties as best we can. Being inquisitive, from my point of view, is taking action to challenge your Risk I.Q.”                                                                                                These observed key attributes by a risk practitioner of over 20 years underscores  the acute need for keeping IIZA membership active as a knowledge acquisition and transfer tool in every member`s career development.
